Leta Hollingworth, considerata la madre della gifted education e della psicologia della giftedness e colei che creò i primi programmi per gifted nelle scuole pubbliche di New York City, nel primo libro di testo sulla gifted education¹, che pubblicò nel 1926 quando insegnava alla Columbia University, ci mise in guardia dal descrivere i gifted attraverso i loro risultati e ciò che dimostrano di saper fare.

“Education and opportunity are the prime determinants of achievement […] If opportunity were indeed the prime determinant of eminence, then we should expect those who belong to socially inferior categories to be virtually excluded from it. This is just what we do find, since the uncultured, the poor, servants, and women are very seldom found to have achieved eminence.”
